Windhoek: The Namibia Rugby Union Premier League continued to produce thrilling action over the weekend as UNAM Rugby Club secured their second win of the season with an impressive performance. The university side defeated Western Suburbs Rugby Club 28-07 at Suburbs Park in Windhoek on Saturday.
According to Namibia Press Agency, after suffering an opening-round defeat to Grootfontein Rugby Club, UNAM responded positively in recent weeks and now appear to be regaining momentum. Playing in honour of their vice-captain, who died in a car accident last week, the university side delivered an emotional and disciplined performance.
Western Suburbs started brightly and looked dangerous during the opening 30 minutes but failed to capitalise on their early pressure. UNAM gradually took control of the contest and went into halftime leading 14-07. The visitors dominated the second half, adding two more converted tries to seal a comfortable victory. Viery Haufiko scored two tries, while Keashan Beukes and Aljarreau Zaahl also crossed the whitewash. Geraldo Beukes was flawless from the kicking tee, converting all four tries.
The victory leaves UNAM sixth on the standings with 11 points from three matches, while Western Suburbs remain bottom of the log with one point from four outings. Elsewhere, Wanderers Rugby Club staged a strong second-half comeback to defeat Reho Falcons Rugby Club 47-23 at Wanderers Stadium in Pioneers Park. Despite trailing 14-20 at halftime, last season's finalists showed their class to secure a dominant victory and remain second on the log with 18 points from four matches.
Log leaders Grootfontein continued their unbeaten run with a commanding 66-25 victory over Rehoboth Rugby Club in Rehoboth. Grootfontein now sit comfortably at the top of the table with 23 points from four matches, while Rehoboth occupy eighth place with six points.
At the coast, Kudus Rugby Club claimed bragging rights in the coastal derby after defeating arch-rivals Dolphins Rugby Club 45-12. Kudus climbed to third place with 14 points from three matches, while Dolphins dropped to fifth on 12 points. Trustco United Rugby Club, currently fourth on the standings with 12 points from three matches, had a bye weekend.
The NRU Premier League resumes on 06 June 2026 with fixtures scheduled in Windhoek, Rehoboth, Grootfontein and Swakopmund.
