Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) president McHenry Venaani has extended a message of condolences to the government and people of Turkey following the deaths of more than 3 000 people in a major earthquake.

By Tuesday, more than 5 000 deaths in total had been reported in both Turkey and neighbouring Syria as a result of the 7.8-magnitude quake, which struck early on Monday.

Venaani in a media statement on behalf of his party on Monday said PDM stands in solidarity with Turkey in the aftermath of the natural disaster, which has caused vast damage to infrastructure and injured thousands.

“I have been immensely moved and disheartened by the report of yesterday wherein the extent of the damage of the destructive earthquake was revealed,” said Venaani.

He further expressed his appreciation for the solidarity displayed by other European and African countries in coming to the aid of Turkey.

The PDM president added that he hopes the international community’s relief efforts reach the survivors in time.

“It is my sincere hope that the relief efforts launched by the international community reach the remote quake-stricken areas in time to provide emergency assistance to the survivors,” he said.
