Windhoek: Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) leader McHenry Venaani has expressed satisfaction with the Mid-Year Budget Statement recently presented by Finance Minister Ericah Shafudah, stating that it addresses the collective struggle of the nation to rebuild, recover, and reimagine an economy that serves its citizens. Venaani shared his outlook on the budget review in the National Assembly on Wednesday.
According to Namibia Press Agency, Venaani commented, 'The mid-year budget statement delivered before this House is not merely a presentation of numbers; it is a reflection of where our nation stands and where it intends to go. I commend the honourable minister and her team for the dedication and clarity with which they have outlined the fiscal position of our republic.' While acknowledging the budget, Venaani also raised concerns about whether it adequately addresses the realities faced by ordinary Namibians, asserting that he offers a balanced reflection on the mid-year budget in the spirit of fairness and national responsibility.
He highlighted the minister's statement regarding Namibia's growth forecast for 2025, noting a revision downward to 3.3 per cent from an earlier estimate of 4.5 per cent. 'This adjustment, while understandable in light of global economic pressures, must also prompt us to reflect on our domestic economic performance. Our country has immense potential, yet we continue to face persistent challenges in mining, agriculture, and manufacturing. We must do more to diversify our economy,' he added.
According to the PDM leader, budget allocations should be guided by empirical evidence, data, and extensive consultation. 'Engaging citizens, the private sector, and civil society in planning will make our policies stronger, more inclusive, and more effective,' he remarked. He further recognised the minister's attempts to navigate a complex economic and fiscal landscape, emphasising the necessity of focusing on economic diversification, fiscal responsibility, and human development.
'We must ensure that every budget allocation strengthens our nation and uplifts our people. Together, we can transform challenges into opportunities, ensuring that our nation emerges more prosperous and resilient for generations to come,' added Venaani.
