The Namibia National Olympic Committee (NNOC) in collaboration with the Franco Namibian Cultural Centre (FNCC) will host this year’s annual Olympic Day celebration in the towns of Windhoek and Keetmanshoop.

The celebration marks the commemoration of the Olympic Movement, when communities of more than 205 nations across the world joined in the day to engage in sports, educational, and cultural events.

This year’s celebration will be held on 23 and 25 June, under the theme ‘Together for a Peaceful World – Greater, Together, Stronger.’

NNOC Secretary-General Joan Smit told the media on Wednesday that the Olympic family believes sport can help make a better world by reconnecting people locally, and globally and by promoting sustainability, inclusion, solidarity and peace.

“The NNOC has partnered with the embassy of France and the FNCC to start our campaign of promoting the 2024 Paris Olympic Games as a part of the Olympic Day celebration,” she said.

Smit added that the birth of the modern Olympics took place in Paris 128 years ago.

“This day, Olympic Day, is developing into much more than a run or just a sports event. Based on the three pillars of ‘move’, ‘learn’ and ‘discover’, national Olympic committees around the world are deploying sports, culture and educational activities aimed at everyone,” Smit said.

The activities in Windhoek will be held at the FNCC from 18h00 to 21h00 on 23 June 2022, with former Namibian sprinter and Olympic medalist Frank Fredericks as the guest speaker, and will continue in Keetmanshoop on 25 June 2022, where children from all walks of life will join in the activities, based on the three pillars of the Olympic Day.

This year’s celebration will also mark 30 years since Namibia participatied in its frst Olympic Games in Barcelona in 1992.
