Windhoek: Ongwediva junior mayor Etuhole Phillemon has called upon Namibia's leaders to prioritize the involvement of young people in the nation's economic growth, emphasizing the need for tangible opportunities rather than mere promises. Speaking at the opening of the 25th Ongwediva Annual Trade Fair, Phillemon highlighted the challenges faced by the youth in accessing employment and business avenues, asserting that a resilient and inclusive economy cannot be built while young Namibians remain underserved.According to Namibia Press Agency, Phillemon painted a picture of the struggles encountered by young Namibians, who, despite being equipped with qualifications and aspirations, face hurdles in realizing their professional dreams. She emphasized that the youth population, which accounts for over one million individuals aged 15 to 34, should be viewed as Namibia's greatest asset rather than a burden.Phillemon called for enhanced integration between educational institutions and the job market, advocating f or initiatives such as internships, apprenticeships, and practical work experiences to bridge the gap. Additionally, she stressed the importance of supporting youth entrepreneurship by providing access to essential resources like finance, mentorship, and business skills, enabling young entrepreneurs to transform their innovative ideas into thriving businesses.Moreover, Phillemon urged for investment in future-oriented skills and mental health services, along with ensuring youth participation in decision-making processes that shape their future. She concluded by calling for young people to have a meaningful presence in policy discussions and budget allocations, underscoring the need for their voices to be heard beyond youth-centric events.
