Windhoek:Agribank has made a significant contribution of N$100,000 to the Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) Support Fund to bolster efforts in containing the outbreak and safeguarding Namibia's vital livestock industry.
According to Namibia Press Agency , the donation was announced during a handover ceremony in Windhoek, where Agribank's CEO, Robert Eiman, emphasized the bank's commitment to aiding the agricultural sector and those whose livelihoods depend on it. Eiman noted that the FMD outbreak has disrupted livestock production, marketing, and trade, adding pressure on farmers and businesses within the agricultural value chain.
During the event, FMD Support Fund Chairperson Medmillian Handura expressed gratitude towards Agribank for their support amidst the challenges faced by the bank. Handura stressed the necessity of collective action in addressing the outbreak's impact.
The FMD Support Fund, a private-sector-led initiative founded by four national farmers' unions, aims to assist farmers in preparing for, containing, and recovering from FMD outbreaks. It focuses on resource mobilization for disease surveillance, biosecurity, public awareness, and essential supply procurement for the Directorate of Veterinary Services. To date, the fund has raised over N$15.35 million in sponsorships and pledges, working towards a N$50 million goal.
