Accra:Former cabinet minister Ben Amathila has called on Namibians to support former president Hifikepunye Pohamba and his family after the death of his wife, Penehupifo, on Saturday night.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Amathila addressed mourners at the Pohamba residence on Sunday morning, emphasizing the need for the family to have time to grieve. He urged attendees to allow the former president space to rest as he copes with the loss of his wife.

Amathila noted that President Pohamba had not been sleeping well and needed a moment alone before engaging with mourners. Although Pohamba was not ready to speak to those gathered, Amathila conveyed his appreciation for their presence and support.

He acknowledged the sacrifices made by mourners who set aside personal commitments to comfort the Pohamba family during this difficult time, emphasizing their importance in helping the family feel less alone in their grief.

Amathila shared that the family had limited information but confirmed that Penehupifo had been hospitalized intermittently. Despite hopes for her recovery, she passed away, which Amathila described as a significant loss, while expressing hope that she was now free from pain.

He also recognized the presence of senior government leaders who visited to offer condolences and encouraged mourners to stay and support each other, as their collective presence could alleviate the burden of the loss.

Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare also visited the Pohamba residence to extend his condolences following the passing of the former First Lady.
