Windhoek: The Ministry of Industries, Mines and Energy has instructed fuel retailers and resellers to exercise discretion when dealing with customers purchasing fuel in bulk. This caution follows growing concerns over panic buying and fuel hoarding.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Minister Modestus Amutse issued a media statement on Monday, emphasizing that the temporary measures aim to curb artificial fuel shortages caused by these activities. He acknowledged the public's concern over the restrictions, particularly from farmers, tourism operators, and businesses that legitimately purchase fuel in bulk for operational needs.

Amutse noted that while many individuals and businesses buy fuel in bulk for genuine purposes, not all possess consumer installation certificates. He stressed that legitimate users should not automatically be viewed as engaging in hoarding or panic buying.

In light of these concerns, the minister directed all fuel retail outlets and resellers to request satisfactory explanations from customers purchasing large quantities of fuel drums or petroleum products before proceeding with sales. Additionally, licensed fuel wholesalers, retailers, and dealers are urged to educate consumers about the dangers of panic buying and fuel hoarding, alongside the temporary government directives in place for the next three months.
