Angola has risen five places in the Global Development Index, from 132 in 2021 to 127 in 2022, the Higher Education, Science and Technology Minister Maria do Rosário Bragança said Wednesday.

According to the minister, who was speaking at the presentation session of the Legal System of the National Science, Technology and Innovation System, the improvement in position is still unsatisfactory, pointing to the need to focus more on education, science, information technology, engineering and mathematics.

The focus on these areas, the minister said, also aims to improve the business environment and the diversification of the economy in the country.

“We have to pay greater attention to scientific investment and the improvement of entrepreneurship, as these are some of the recommendations we received for the improvement of science and innovation,” Bragança said.

The minister explained that the sector is working so that higher education institutions have disciplines and programmes on entrepreneurship.

Maria do Rosário Bragança added that scientific productivity has been improving over the last few years, although she said it is still poor.

In order to reverse this situation, the minister defended the need for continuous training of the staff, access to the best scientific magazines, as they are fundamental for the scientific development of the professionals.

The meeting aimed to address the contribution of the government in improving the indicators of science, technology and innovation, through the appropriation of the legislation on science, technology and innovation, as well as the contribution of the annual calendar of scientific events.
