Another silver for Namibia

Olympic Silver Medallist, Christine Mboma, led Namibia to a 4×100 silver medal on the last day of the World Athletics Under-20 (U20) championships in Nairobi, Kenya on Sunday afternoon.

Namibia finished second in a time of 43.76 seconds (s) which is a Namibian national record, breaking the one set by Keshia Kalomo, Globine Mayova, Tjipekapora Herunga and Lilanie Klaasman in a time of 43.53s in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

Jamaica took the gold medal in a time of 42.90s, a championship record, while Nigeria came third to secure a bronze medal in a seasons’ best of 43.90s.

The Namibian sprinting sensation produced a stunning last leg run (9.86s) to see Namibia recovering from the fifth position to second and win a third silver medal at the championship.

Anchor runner, Ndawana Haitembu did not have the best of starts (12.18s), before handing over to 100 and 200-meter championship silver medallist Beatrice Masingili (10.16s) at the back straight.

Masilingi then handed over to Nandi Tjanjeua Vass (11.56s) who had a decent run to hand over the button to Mboma in the fifth position.

Their second-place finish sees Namibia with a total of four medals, one gold and three silver.

Masilingi has three silver medals (100, 200 and 2x100m) while Mboma has a gold and silver medal (100 and 4×100).

Namibia had sent six athletes to the games, five females and one male, Elvis Gaseb, who competed in the 100m race and lost in the first qualifying heats.

The team is expected in the country on Monday.
