Windhoek: Minister of Information and Communication Technology, Emma Theofelus, revealed that the Cabinet has approved measures to strengthen the Namibia Medicines Regulatory Council. This decision emerged from a Cabinet meeting held on 08 July 2025, as announced by Theofelus during a briefing session at the Government Information Centre.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the Cabinet has also endorsed the addition of staff to the regulatory council to boost its operational efficiency. This move comes in response to recent allegations of irregularities involving the sale of unlicensed medicines and theft within the council. Health Minister Esperance Luvindao has already contacted the Anti-Corruption Commission to probe these allegations.

The leader of the Affirmative Repositioning movement, Job Amupanda, recently alleged in Parliament that the council lacks a legal practitioner and that stolen medicine from Central Medical Stores was sold back to the stores. He claimed that those responsible are currently in the United States.

During her briefing, Theofelus also highlighted Namibia's participation in the 4th Africa Health Exhibition and Conference held in June 2025 in Cairo, Egypt. She indicated that the Cabinet supports resource mobilization efforts by the ministry to implement proposed initiatives.

Additionally, Theofelus mentioned a report on President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah's visits to several African countries. The report urges various ministries and the Namibia Investment Promotion and Development Board to act on agreements made with counterparts in Angola, Botswana, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Tanzania.
