Katima mulilo: A group of parents at Alufea Sampofu Combined School in Katima Mulilo, located in the Zambezi region, staged a peaceful demonstration in front of the school on Thursday. They are calling for the immediate removal of three teachers due to alleged unprofessional conduct.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the group, led by school board chairperson Vincent Mwemba, presented a petition accusing the teachers of absenteeism without leave, misuse of sick leave, and intoxication during official working hours. The community members from Nova and Macaravani expressed their frustration, stating that their children are not receiving proper education and questioning how they will pass their examinations under such circumstances.
The parents highlighted concerns over the quality of education, noting that the teachers are still receiving full salaries despite not fulfilling their duties. They emphasized that the teachers' alleged behavior is in violation of the Education Act and undermines the authority of the school principal. The parents urged the regional director to take immediate action by either removing or transferring the teachers to other schools. They warned that they would not allow the teachers to continue their duties if action is not taken.
Receiving the petition, Rosco Misika Lukubwe, the Katima Mulilo Education Circuit Inspector, assured the parents that the petition would be forwarded to the regional director, who was currently out of town. He advised the school principal to collaborate with the affected teachers as a team until the director intervenes when schools reopen the following week.
The school serves over 1,200 learners from grades zero to nine.
