New york: A Chinese envoy on Wednesday called on the Houthis in Yemen to stop attacking commercial vessels in the Red Sea.

According to Namibia Press Agency, China has expressed its deep concern over the recent armed attacks on two cargo ships in the Red Sea. The country reiterates its call on the Houthis to respect the navigation rights of commercial vessels of all countries in the Red Sea in accordance with international law. Geng Shuang, China's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, emphasized the need for the Houthis to desist from targeting commercial vessels and to maintain the safety of waterways in the Red Sea.

China is also concerned about the new round of exchange of fire between the Houthis and Israel and the worsening trend of developments, as stated by Geng in his address to the Security Council. He urged all parties to exercise calm and restraint, refraining from actions that could escalate tensions.

Geng appealed for all parties involved in the Yemeni conflict to show political will, enhance dialogue and communication, and gradually build mutual trust to create conditions for a final political settlement of the Yemeni issue. He also called on the international community to increase humanitarian assistance to Yemen to help alleviate the humanitarian crisis on the ground.

The envoy noted that resolving the issues in Yemen and the Red Sea requires easing and de-escalation of the overall regional situation. Geng further highlighted the importance of stopping the war in Gaza and ending the humanitarian catastrophe, advocating for the implementation of the two-state solution at an early date.

Geng emphasized that the ceasefire agreement involving Israel, the United States, and Iran should be observed, stressing that state sovereignty should be respected and the purposes and principles of the UN Charter adhered to.
