Kavango west: A single cleaner position advertised at Karanawa Primary School in the Kavango West Region attracted more than 500 applicants on Tuesday. Karanawa Primary School principal Marcus Kasanga informed that out of the 581 applications received, 442 applicants were deemed eligible while 139 were rejected during the initial screening process.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Kasanga expressed concern about the overwhelming response, suggesting that such positions should be localised to reduce the administrative burden. "The attendance is very high, I feel these kinds of positions should at least be localised and should not be open to everyone, because now we are very much challenged with the number," he said.

Some applicants called for the interviews to be cancelled, but Kasanga stated that the process would continue as planned, citing the cost of calling off the interviews. Director of Education for Kavango West, Pontianus Musore, acknowledged the difficult situation, noting the competitive nature of the application process.

An applicant from Oshakati, Klaudia Ashipala, raised concerns about potential language barriers, as the interview questions were to be provided in Rukwangali and English. In response, Musore instructed the school to conduct the interviews in English, highlighting the requirement for proficiency in reading and writing English for the position.

The group of applicants plans to submit a petition to the director, requesting the cancellation of the interview process and advocating for volunteers currently at the schools to be considered for the position.
