Commonwealth Day to be celebrated in capital

The British High Commission in Namibia will commemorate Commonwealth Day in the capital on Monday.

According to a media statement issued on Wednesday, the event, to be held in the capital, will feature a virtual address from King Charles III, as Head of the Commonwealth, for the first time since assuming the throne after the death of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022.

The event will be held under the theme; ‘Forging a sustainable and peaceful common future’ and will be hosted by the Chairperson of the National Council, Lukas Muha, and High Commissioners from Commonwealth countries resident in Namibia including Botswana, Ghana, India, Kenya, Malaysia, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, the United Kingdom, and Zambia.

The statement said the event will include the delivery of a message from King Charles III; speeches by Members of Parliament and the government; cultural entertainment provided by pupils from schools in the Khomas Region, and a reception to showcase the different cuisines from each of the Commonwealth countries present in Namibia.

Commonwealth Day is an annual celebration observed by people all over the Commonwealth in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Americas, the Pacific and Europe.

Commonwealth Day 2023 marks the 10th anniversary of the signing of the Commonwealth Charter, which was signed by Queen Elizabeth II on 11 March 2013.
