Windhoek:Zambezi Zambezi Governor Dorothy Kabula-Simushi has called on communities to remain vigilant against the abuse, neglect, exploitation, and discrimination of older persons.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the governor's speech was delivered on her behalf at the International Day of Older Persons commemoration held in Muyako village, Katima Mulilo Rural Constituency. She emphasized that senior citizens deserve the same rights to dignity, respect, participation, and access to services as any other member of society.

Kabula-Simushi urged the community to work together to build age-friendly environments where older persons can safely access health and social services. She encouraged individuals not to remain silent when witnessing the mistreatment of older people, highlighting their role as valuable sources of knowledge and wisdom.

To meet the evolving needs of older persons, she advocated for preventive healthcare, regular health screenings, and healthy lifestyles. The governor also emphasized the importance of mental and emotional well-being, accessible social support systems, and active aging initiatives such as community exercise programs, gardening, and volunteering.

Acknowledging limited public resources, Kabula-Simushi reminded attendees that government programs alone are insufficient. She stressed the role of families as primary supporters, with communities sharing the responsibility for elder care.

The event, organized by the regional directorate of the Ministry of Health and Social Services in collaboration with the Hope of Life Organisation, featured free health screenings for seniors. It was well-received by attendees, including 78-year-old Magret Sitali, who appreciated the services and shared her experiences as an older member of the community.
