The executive director (ED) in the Ministry of Health and Social Services, Ben Nangombe, said the Trusted Vaccines platform is now available to generate COVID-19 digital vaccination certificates to persons who are fully vaccinated.
Nangombe in a statement issued on Tuesday said the Government of Namibia has partnered with the African Union and PanaBios Consortium to introduce the Trusted Travel and Trusted Vaccines technology platform as from 26 April 2022.
“The new technological innovation provides for the issuance of secure, tamper-proof and digitally verifiable COVID-19 laboratory test results and vaccine certificates to facilitate smoother and hassle-free travel,” he said.
Nangombe said following weeks of troubleshooting and pressure testing, the ministry customised the system for Namibia which is now in a position to issue authentic and verifiable COVID-19 vaccine certificates.
Travellers can now enjoy the comfort and convenience of generating their authentic COVID-19 digital vaccination certificates online, he said.
“For a digital vaccination certificate with a QR code to be issued, the platform is equipped with a ‘self-upload’ functionality enabling an individual to upload information and images of their vaccination cards and passport or travel documents for authentication,” the ED said.
He further said that the ministry supports ongoing engagement to establish full interoperability between the Trusted Vaccines framework and the European Union digital COVID-19 ID certification trust gateways.
Nangombe said once generated, the provisional digital vaccination certificates are approved by the ministry before they can be used for travel purposes.
“Travellers are encouraged to upload their documents at least two weeks prior to the travelling date to allow the ministry to approve the certificate. Travellers who are unable to use the self-upload option may contact the COVID-19 toll free number (0800100100) for assistance.”
