COVID-19: Namibia records 1 390 new cases and 55 deaths

Health and Social Services Minister, Dr Kalumbi Shangula said Namibia recorded 1 390 new COVID-19 cases and 55 deaths on Wednesday.

The new deaths were recorded from 16 districts – Rehoboth, Swakopmund, Keetmanshoop, Mariental, Okahandja, Rundu, Oshikuku, Omaruru, Okahao, Windhoek, Onandjokwe, Lüderitz, Okakarara, Grootfontein, Katima Mulilo and Usakos.

Shangula urged the public to seek early medical assistance, saying among the COVID-19 deaths recorded on Wednesday are three home deaths.

“Today we announce 55 deaths, none were fully vaccinated,” he said, although indicating that one person had received their first vaccine dose.

The health minister said the newly confirmed cases were identified from 3 653 results received from laboratories over the last 24 hours and represent a 38 per cent positivity ratio.

The cases have a gender distribution of 751 female and 639 male patients, with the youngest being three days old and the oldest, 79 years.

The Khomas Region alone accounted for 40 per cent of the new cases at 561, followed by Hardap with 143 cases, ||Kharas at 109, Erongo 108, Kavango East 93, Omaheke 75, Otjozondjupa 71, Oshikoto 67, Oshana 64, Omustati 23, Kunene 18, Zambezi 17 and Kavango West with four cases.

Shangula said, among the confirmed cases, 151 are learners from different schools, 25 healthcare workers, 26 teachers and 25 students from different institutions.

Namibia currently has a total number of 15 407 active cases, of which 528 are hospitalised and 94 in intensive care units, while COVID-19 deaths currently stand at 1 279.

Furthermore 815 new recoveries were announced, bringing the total number of recoveries to 62 026.

A cumulative number of 110 597 people have received their first dose of either of the COVID-19 vaccines and 21 463 have received both doses.
