COVID-19: Namibia records 107 new cases, five deaths

Health and Social Services Minister, Dr Kalumbi Shangula, announced on Friday that Namibia on Thursday recorded 107 new Coronavirus (COVID-19) cases and five deaths, bringing the total number of deaths in the country to 3 399.

Shangula, in the daily COVID-19 update on Friday, said one death occurred on 25 August 2021 and other four occurred on 31 August 2021, and that none of the deceased were vaccinated.

The newly confirmed cases represent a seven per cent positivity ratio with a gender distribution of 64 female and 43 male patients, with the youngest being five-years-old and the oldest, 91 years.

Oshikoto recorded the highest number of positive cases at 22 followed by Omusati with 21 cases, Kunene 16, Oshana 15, Erongo 10, Khomas nine, Kavango East four, Otjozondjupa three, ||Kharas two, Hardap two, Omaheke one, Ohangwena one, while Kavango West also recorded one case.

Shangula said of all the reported cases, 22 are learners from different schools, five teachers, three healthcare workers and one tertiary student. However, 10 of the confirmed cases have received one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and only two have received two doses.

Namibia currently has 2 157 active cases, of which 169 are hospitalised and 24 are in intensive care units.

Furthermore, 36 new recoveries were announced, bringing the total number of recoveries in the country to 119 746.

A cumulative number of 216 741 people had received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine by 03 September 2021, while 120 596 had received their second doses.
