COVID-19: Namibia records 171 new cases, 10 deaths

Minister of Health and Social Services, Dr Kalumbi Shangula on Wednesday announced that Namibia recorded 171 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 53 603.

The cases had a gender distribution of 93 males and 78 females between the ages of one and 80 years.

Shangula said the country also recorded 10 COVID-19 related deaths from the districts of Windhoek, Mariental, Rehoboth and Swakopmund, bringing the total number of deaths to 789. Of the 10 deceased persons, aged between 45 and 80 years, seven were reported to have had comorbidities.

Of the new cases, Khomas recorded the highest number at 105 followed by Omaheke with 18 and Erongo with 17 cases. ||Kharas recorded 14 cases while Oshana recorded seven cases. Otjozondjupa recorded six cases while Hardap and Oshikoto recorded two cases each.

The cases are reported from eight regions and included 20 learners and three teachers from different schools, five students and 10 healthcare workers.

The minister urged parents and guardians to keep children who are ill or experiencing signs and symptoms consistent with COVID-19 at home until they have recovered to help control exposure to other learners.

“We continue calling upon all learners to strictly follow the COVID-19 infection prevention and control measures at all times. As we are currently experiencing high numbers of COVID-19 cases from active community transmission and increased deaths of our loved ones, it is imperative for everyone to take upon themselves the responsibility of caring for their neighbour by following COVID-19 regulations,” he said.

A total of 46 new recoveries were also recorded bringing the total recoveries to 49 596.

Active cases on Wednesday stood at 3 207 with 242 hospitalised cases of which 51 are in intensive care units.

Cumulatively, 63 309 COVID-19 vaccine first doses and 6 456 COVID-19 vaccine second doses were administered by Wednesday.
