COVID-19: Namibia records 186 new cases, 12 deaths

Health and Social Services Minister, Dr Kalumbi Shangula has announced that Namibia on Tuesday recorded 186 new COVID-19 cases and 12 deaths recorded in eight districts, bringing the total number of deaths in the country to 3 300.

Shangula in the daily COVID-19 update on Wednesday said of the newly reported deaths, one occurred on 05 August 2021, eight occurred between 12 and 15 August while three occurred within the 24-hour reporting cycle.

“One of the deaths, from Swakopmund district, was reported as a home death and none of the deceased persons were vaccinated,” he said.

The health minister said the newly confirmed cases were identified from 1 045 results received from laboratories in the last 24 hours representing an 18 per cent positivity ratio.

These cases have a gender distribution of 99 female and 87 male patients with the youngest being five months old and the oldest, 91 years.

Among the confirmed cases 30 are learners and three teachers.

According to Shangula, none of the confirmed cases were vaccinated against COVID-19.

Oshana recorded the highest number of cases at 90, followed by Ohangwena with 20 cases, Omusati 19, ||Kharas 10, Zambezi nine, Khomas and Otjozondjupa with eight cases each, Oshikoto seven, Erongo six, Kunene five, Hardap three and Kavango East one.

Namibia currently has 2 870 active cases of which 235 are hospitalised and 43 are in intensive care units.

Furthermore, 221 new recoveries were announced, bringing the total number of recoveries in the country to 116 704.

More so, a total number of 190 306 people had received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine by Tuesday, while 83 629 had received the two full doses.
