COVID-19: Namibia records 69 new cases, five deaths

Health and Social Services Minister, Dr Kalumbi Shangula announced that Namibia on Wednesday recorded 69 new COVID-19 cases and five deaths bringing the total deaths to 3 422 in the country.

Shangula, in the daily COVID-19 update on Thursday, said the newly confirmed cases are part of 1 476 samples tested at various laboratories around the country, representing a 4.7 per cent positivity ratio.

The gender distribution is 45 female and 24 male patients, ranging between six months old and 97 years.

Oshana recorded the highest number of positive cases at 11 followed by Ohangwena with 10 cases, Oshikoto 10, Otjozondjupa seven, Zambezi seven, ||Kharas six, Kunene six, Omusati four, Khomas three, Erongo three and Omaheke two.

Shangula said of the new reported cases, nine are learners and seven teachers from different schools and four have received one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, while three have received two doses.

“We have been observing a progressive decline in number of new cases as demonstrated by today’s new confirmed cases and positivity rate of less than five per cent. This gives us confidence that the strategies we have put in place to contain the pandemic are bearing fruits,” said Shangula.

Namibia currently has 1 459 active cases, of which 162 are hospitalised and 22 in intensive care.

Furthermore, 153 new recoveries were announced, bringing the total number of recoveries in the country to 121 073.

A cumulative number of 225 359 people had received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine by Wednesday, while 133 237 had received their full doses.
