Divundu Correctional facility produces 1334 tonnes of maize

The Namibia Correctional Services (NCS) said it has 1334.38 tons of maize grain in stocks at the Divundu Correctional Facility, enough to supply all correctional institutions and nearby police holding cells for a year when grains are processed into maize meal.

Assistant Commissioner Salmi Hangula said this in a media statement issued on Friday, following the visit of Commissioner General Rafael Hamunyela to the Divundu and Evaristus Shikongo Correctional Facilities in the Kavango East Region on 24 and 25 January 2023.

Hangula said the purpose of the visit was to assess farm management activities at these facilities.

‘Divundu and Evaristus Shikongo are part of the four farms which are producing horticulture and agronomic crops as well as livestock for inmates rations in the Namibian Correctional Services,’ she said.

Hangula said during this season, a total of 166.7 hectares, consisting of seven pivots, were planted with maize, while 16 hectares under micro irrigation were planted with vegetables and 33 hectares under fruit production at Divundu Correctional Services.

Evaristus Shikongo Correctional Facility had 18.5 hectares planted with yellow maize, 1.5 hectares under fruit production and 0.5 hectares planted with vegetables.

The faciity also has 363 cattle, 242 goats,152 sheep and four horses.

Hangula said Divundu Correctional Facility supplies all correctional institutions with maize meal, bread and flour.

The facility also supplies the same products to Divundu, Ndiyona and Omega police stations.

Evaristus Shikongo Correctional Facility supplies beef, oranges, lemons, naartjies to all Correctional Facilities.

In future, the NCS wants to introduce poultry and pork production at the Evaristus Shikongo Correctional Facility.
