President Hage Geingob on Thursday appointed Basilius Dyakugha as the new Ombudsman with effect from 01 October 2021, as per the recommendation of the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) that conducted the recruitment process.

A media statement issued on Thursday by the presidency spokesperson Alfredo Hengari, said the appointment was done in terms of article 90 of the Namibian Constitution that gives power to the president to appoint the Ombudsman after recommendation from the JSC.

Dyakugha will serve for a period of five years, taking over from John Walters who is going into retirement after serving as Ombudsman since 2004.

Meanwhile, Geingob also appointed new commissioners for the Electoral Commission of Namibia with effect from 16 September 2021 and they will also serve for a period of five years.

The new commissioners are Joram Rukambe, Elsie Nghikembua and Emmerentia Leonard, and their appointments occurred in line with Electoral Act No. 5 of 2014, which assigns power to the president for the appointments.
