Windhoek:FIFA has released its post-tournament report for the 2026 World Cup, highlighting counter-pressing and a redefined role for goalkeepers as significant trends. The report, produced by FIFA's Technical Study Group and the FIFA Football Performance Insights Department, analyzed all 104 matches to identify tactical innovations and evolving player roles.
According to Namibia Press Agency, Counter-pressing was identified as a double-edged asset, with top teams turning a loss of possession into immediate attacking opportunities. Goalkeepers have also taken on more active roles in the build-up phase, aiding teams in overcoming opposition presses.
The analysis showed varying pathways to success, including aggressive high presses, disciplined low blocks, and rapid transitions. The report delved into all phases of play, raising nine key topics such as building with a back three, wide-player rotations, and exploiting inside channels.
FIFA's chief of global football development, Arsene Wenger, emphasized that the objective was to understand the strategies behind team actions, including space management, attacking and defending tactics, and how player and coach decisions influenced game dynamics.
