Fishrot accused Ricardo Gustavo was granted bail of N.dollars 800 000 in the Windhoek High Court on Wednesday.

While reading the bail conditions, High Court Judge Herman Oosthuizen said considering evidence presented to the court during the bail application, Gustavo should be released from the Windhoek Correctional Facility where he has been held since his arrest in November 2019, once he deposits the bail money.

Oosthuizen set a number of bail conditions, amongst them that Gustavo should report to the Kappsfarm Police Station twice a day on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and that he should report to an investigating officer from the Anti-Corruption Commission.

He is also not allowed to leave his Finkenstein Estate house without being accompanied by the investigating officer and should not visit any of his co-accused persons. Gustavo is also not allowed within a radius of 25 kilometres of the Hosea Kutako International Airport and one kilometre of the Eros Airport.

“The accused shall not be allowed to possess any travel documents of Namibia, Angola, South Africa, Botswana or any other international states. He is prohibited from contacting any perspective witness or accused persons from Iceland, Angola and the United Arab Emirates, or any officials from Tundavala,” said Oosthuizen.

The judge added that Gustavo will be wearing a Global Positioning System (GPS) device on his wrist or ankle to monitor his whereabouts at all times, and all vehicles he will be traveling in should be fitted with GPS devices.

Gustavo has been in custody since his arrest in November 2019 along with former Attorney General Sacky Shanghala, former Fisheries Minister Bernard Esau, James Hatuikulipi, Pius Mwatelulo, Mike Nghipunya and Tamson Hatuikulipi on charges of corruption and money laundering for allegedly accepting bribes from Icelandic fishing company Samherji in exchange for access to the Namibian fishing industry.
