FlyWestair stretches business to north eastern regions

Namibia’s privately owned airline, FlyWestair has extended its services to the north eastern regions by introducing Windhoek-Rundu scheduled flights.

FlyWestair came into operation in June 2019, before the national airline Air Namibia was liquidated in March 2021.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony at the Rundu Airport on Tuesday, Westair Aviation Chief Executive Officer, Henri van Schalkwyk said the introduction of the route serves as a contribution towards the country’s economy by enabling the connections in business and tourism endeavours.

He explained that the Kavango East and West and Zambezi regions are hubs for the development of the agricultural and tourism sectors, therefore the two weekly flights will enable the regions to be a destination of choice.

“The introduction of the route will enable business people to commute to this part of Namibia in a safe and timely fashion. The regions have always been seen as a night stop for tourists en route to other destinations in Botswana and Namibia,” noted Van Schalkwyk.

Mayor of the Rundu Town Council, Gabriel Kanyanga said the route will lure potential economic growth for the region by ensuring that the air travel meets the demands of the discerning investor and tourism industry.

“Rundu being the economic hub of the regions, the focus is on the next growth frontier. The introduction of the direct air link between Windhoek and Rundu is a significant step to foster economic business growth in our town and the region,” he noted.

The scheduled flights effective Tuesday are two weekly flights between Rundu and Windhoek, as well as three weekly flights between Katima Mulilo and Windhoek to the existing route between Windhoek and the northern regions.
