The Kanono Combined School in the Zambezi Region on Friday received a refurbished science laboratory from the First National Bank of Namibia (FNB) through the FirstRand Foundation Trust.

The sponsorship, valued at N.dollars 145 000, enabled the conversion of a classroom into a fully-equipped science lab.

Reagan Kwala, FNB Branch Manager for Katima Mulilo, highlighted the importance of education as an equaliser in a media statement issued by the bank on Monday, saying focus was placed on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects.

‘The world we live in is rapidly changing and STEM subjects are at the forefront of this change. Projects such as this one are important because they support our objective of expanding access to a world of STEM. Our country needs young people such as yourselves to pursue studies in STEM subjects in order to lessen the impact of the socio-economic challenges we are facing and make the future brighter for every Namibian,’’ he said.

FNB is proud to be a part of the project, according to Kwala, and believes it will help the Kanono Combined School discover the next generation of scientists, engineers and mathematicians, who will propel Namibia forward.

‘The future begins today and with hard work and dedication, you will emerge with the skills and knowledge to make a difference in our communities and the country as a whole,’’ he said.

The recipient school’s principal, Brian Ndabeni, expressed gratitude to FNB and stated that the science lab will enhance learning and improve the performance of students at the school.

“Indeed FNB, you are a reliable partner in education. Your eagerness and kind-heartedness to invest in the Namibian child have brought great pride, respect and dignity. It is no wonder the bank was awarded as the Best Bank in Namibia, because of the quality service accompanied by their support of the Namibian community at large. Your investment will be put to good use and I’m confident it will yield the desired outcome,’’ Ndabeni was quoted as saying.
