Windhoek: Former Otjombinde constituency councillor in the Omaheke region, Karii Marenga, passed away on Saturday in Windhoek following a period of ill-health. Marenga, aged 65, served as the councillor from 2009 to 2015 and was a prominent figure in his community.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Marenga's death was confirmed by his brother, Fessy Rikondja Marenga, who expressed the family's profound loss. Fessy described his brother as a wise and steadfast individual admired within the fields of agriculture, community affairs, and politics. He highlighted Karii's dedicated service to the Swapo party both in the Omaheke region and nationwide.

Karii Marenga was a notable farmer, gaining recognition through his Karima Brahman Stud livestock, which won several awards at agricultural exhibitions. He played a key role in establishing the Eastern Epukiro Farmers Association and the Omuramba ua Mbinda conservancy, advocating for the Ovambanderu community's interests.

Fessy Marenga recounted his brother's unwavering commitment to Swapo affairs, eventually leading to his election as the Otjombinde constituency councillor. He credited Karii's bravery with opening doors for many in the region.

Erastus Kahuure, senior chief of the Ovambanderu Traditional Council and Karii's uncle, paid tribute to him as a dedicated individual who prioritized community needs. Kahuure expressed his personal and communal sense of loss with Marenga's passing.

Ruth Kaukuata-Mbura, Swapo coordinator for the Omaheke region, described Marenga as a tireless party worker whose contributions were immense. She noted his longstanding role as secretary general of the elders council, emphasizing his unifying spirit and valuable counsel.

Karii Marenga is survived by his wife, eight children, and fourteen grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.
