Windhoek:The new German Ambassador to Namibia, Thomas Wimmer, has committed to enhancing bilateral cooperation with Namibia, focusing on development cooperation, renewable energy, transport, education, and multilateral diplomacy.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Wimmer made these remarks after presenting his letter of credence to President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah at State House. He emphasized Namibia's importance as a partner for Germany, highlighting the strong ties between the two nations across several sectors.

Germany has been a key development partner for Namibia since its independence, with Wimmer stating that the country intends to continue this role. He also expressed a desire to deepen political cooperation, especially on multilateral issues and efforts related to strengthening the United Nations.

Wimmer cited the Pact for the Future, co-facilitated by Namibia and Germany, as a testament to their cooperation on the global stage. He also mentioned plans to bolster ties in culture, education, and science, referencing a German astronaut's visit to Namibia to engage with students on space technology and exploration.

He acknowledged the growing pressure on development cooperation in the Global North, including Germany, where there is increasing scrutiny of government expenditure abroad. Wimmer emphasized the need to demonstrate the benefits of such cooperation, suggesting that the partnership with Namibia offers a valuable opportunity to showcase mutual benefits.

Renewable energy is identified as a key area for future collaboration, alongside transport and technical and vocational education and training (TVET). Wimmer highlighted the recent opening of the Karibib-Usakos section of the B2 road as an example of German-supported infrastructure projects, noting its significance as a transport corridor in Namibia.

Investment in technical and vocational education is deemed crucial to ensure that Namibia's emerging energy sector generates employment opportunities for its citizens.
