President Hage Geingob on Monday welcomed a business delegation from Germany, which is visiting Namibia to foster commitment towards the envisioned green hydrogen project.

The delegation of more than 20 German business people in the green hydrogen sector is led by the German Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, Robert Habeck.

Speaking during the courtesy visit by the delegation at State House, Geingob said Namibia and Germany have a long history, noting that the green hydrogen project is a new method of cooperation between the two countries.

Geingob said the world is looking for new ways of doing businesses to address climate change challenges, noting that Namibia’s green hydrogen project is very optimistic, hence the cooperation.

He emphasised that Namibia’s green hydrogen project is not a one-man show and the country has institutions, processes and systems in place, adding that even after his tenure comes to an end, the green hydrogen sector will continue to flourish and contribute greatly to the economy and climate change.

“We are very happy to receive a big delegation, it is the first for Namibia to receive such a big delegation from Germany. We thank Germany for what it has pledged to Namibia in terms of green hydrogen, including the provision of scholarships and institutions to be set up to prepare for the new area of green hydrogen,” Geingob said.

Habeck said the aim is to position Namibia as a green hydrogen hub with affordable, reliable and clean energy, noting that a lot must be done regarding the poor energy education and governmental systems, amongst others.

“The visit is a commitment that we want to make the project happen in Namibia. During the meeting in Davos we discussed reliable, clean energy but also the interest of export of green hydrogen from Namibia to Germany,” he said.
