Windhoek:The government has partially lifted the restrictions that were imposed following the detection of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) in the Karasburg Veterinary District. This decision was announced by the Directorate of Veterinary Services through Veterinary Public Notification No. 16 of 2026, after enhanced surveillance, livestock inspections, and traceability efforts.

According to Namibia Press Agency , Preliminary findings from the Meat Corporation of Namibia (Meatco) suggest that the disease remains localized within the ||Kharas Region. A herd that had moved from the infected farm to the Otjozondjupa Region was traced and tested negative for the disease.

The updated measures allow for the partial lifting of restrictions both north and south of the Veterinary Cordon Fence, with the exception of the //Kharas Region. They also permit slaughtering under specific veterinary and biosecurity conditions and allow for the movement and trade of certain processed animal products nationwide.

Meatco's Deputy Chairperson, Stephanie De Klerk, highlighted the significance of Namibia's animal health, surveillance, and traceability systems, which enable rapid and effective responses to such challenges. She emphasized that these systems are crucial for protecting the livelihoods of producers and employees and for maintaining confidence in Namibian beef in both domestic and international markets.

Meatco stated it will align its procurement, slaughter, and marketing activities with the necessary veterinary requirements and urged producers and stakeholders to continue adhering to guidelines from veterinary authorities. Despite the positive developments, Meatco stressed the need for ongoing vigilance in managing the situation.
