Karasburg:Kharas Region: The Kharas Region is on high alert following the confirmed outbreak of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) in the Karasburg State Veterinary District. Governor Dawid Gertze has addressed the public, urging strict adherence to veterinary measures and collective efforts to safeguard the region's crucial agricultural sector.
According to Namibia Press Agency, Gertze stressed the importance of disruptions, despite their economic challenges, to prevent a broader collapse of the region's livestock economy. He emphasized that livestock in the Kharas Region holds significant economic value and represents generational hard work, food security, and family heritage.
Governor Gertze appealed to all residents, farmers, and stakeholders to remain calm, vigilant, and responsible. He urged adherence to movement restrictions and directives from veterinary authorities, warning against illegal movement of livestock or animal products that could endanger communities and livelihoods.
Farmers are encouraged to monitor their animals closely and report any signs of FMD to the nearest State Veterinary Office promptly. Early reporting and cooperation with veterinary officials are crucial to assessing the outbreak's extent and containing its spread.
Gertze also cautioned against spreading unverified information or rumours that could cause unnecessary fear and confusion. He advised relying solely on information from authorized institutions such as the Directorate of Veterinary Services and the Ministry of Agriculture.
The Ministry of Agriculture reported FMD detection in Karasburg, with 63 cattle showing symptoms on September 22. Laboratory tests confirmed 10 out of 11 samples positive for the virus on September 23. Consequently, the National FMD contingency plan was activated, including a nationwide ban on moving cloven-hoofed animals and their products, halting related trade and slaughter activities, and prohibiting imports and exports.
Farmers are reminded that unauthorized importation of FMD vaccines or conducting vaccinations in FMD-free zones is illegal and subject to legal penalties.
