Grootfontein: Two Grade 9 learners were arrested on Wednesday for allegedly being in possession of cannabis on the premises of Friedrich Awaseb Senior Secondary School at Grootfontein in the Otjozondjupa Region.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the Namibian Police Force's head of community affairs in the region, Senior Inspector Maureen Mbeha, informed that the suspects are a 19-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy, both learners at the school. They were apprehended for possession of dependence-producing substance (skunk cannabis) around 10h37 on Wednesday.
The cannabis weighed 14.5 grams and has an estimated street value of N.dollars 725. In a related incident, the 32-year-old aunt of the female learner was arrested around 11h30 on the same day for possession of and/or dealing in drugs after she was allegedly found with cannabis in her possession at the town's local street market.
Mbeha stated that nearly N.dollars 20 000, suspected to be proceeds from the sale of illegal drugs, was found in her possession and seized along with the cannabis. The cannabis allegedly found with her weighed 602 grams and had an estimated street value of N.dollars 30 000.
The two learners and the woman were expected to appear in the Grootfontein Magistrate's Court on Friday. Police investigations continue.
