Grootfontein Woman Faces Court for Alleged Murder of Police Officer Husband

Grootfontein: A 34-year-old woman appeared in the Grootfontein Magistrate's Court on Monday for the alleged murder of her 50-year-old husband, who was a sergeant police officer at Okakarara. Annelda |Uiras appeared before magistrate Adelinus Hailonga on charges of murder, organised crime and attempt to defeat the course of justice.

According to Namibia Press Agency, during court proceedings it was alleged that |Uiras attacked and killed Thomas Shigwedha on 03 June 2025 with the intent to claim two different funeral covers worth N.dollars 50,000 and N.dollars 80,000, respectively. She allegedly carried out the crime alone by attacking Shigwedha with a rock multiple times in the bushes at the town.

Shigwedha was reportedly killed during a visit to his wife in Grootfontein. |Uiras was only arrested on 09 April 2026 at Grootfontein following an extensive police investigation.

|Uiras opted to engage a private lawyer, and her case was postponed to 01 June 2026. Magistrate Hailonga remanded her in police custody pending further police investigations and to allow her to obtain legal representation. Prosecutor Kristiana Erastus represented the State in the matter. Police investigations continue.
