Swakopmund: Secretary general of the Namibia Paralympic Committee (NPC), Michael Hamukwaya, expressed his satisfaction with the athletes' performance at the African Union Sport Council (AUSC) Region Five Youth Games currently underway in Swakopmund.
According to Namibia Press Agency, in an interview conducted on Tuesday at the conclusion of day two of the athletics competitions, Hamukwaya described the event as an impressive competition from its commencement, despite initial weather challenges. He noted the weather in Swakopmund started cold but became more favorable, enhancing the competitive atmosphere.
Hamukwaya emphasized the enthusiasm and dedication of the young athletes participating in the championship, highlighting their eagerness to perform well for their countries and showcase their talents. He remarked on the seriousness with which the athletes approached the competition, particularly noting the success of the para-athletes who secured two gold medals and one silver medal by the end of the second day. He expressed optimism for the upcoming 400 meters event.
The secretary general mentioned the Paralympic team comprises six athletes-one female and five males-who are expected to win additional medals for Namibia. Initially, the team started with 20 athletes, but only six advanced through the classification. Hamukwaya expressed pride in the Paralympic athletes' ability to maintain Namibia's position at the top of the medal tally.
The AUSC Region 5 Games are being held in Windhoek and Swakopmund from July 4 to 13, 2025. The event features competitions in athletics, swimming, karate, judo, football, volleyball, boxing, table tennis, tennis, basketball, netball, and e-sports.
