Glasgow: Namibia's 55kg boxer, Philip Mutakela Haoseb, says he is ready to continue making his country proud after booking his place in the round of 16 at the 2026 Commonwealth Games. The 21-year-old, making his Commonwealth Games debut at the Scottish Event Campus (SEC) in Glasgow, Scotland delivered a commanding performance to defeat Eswatini's Siboniso Charles Vilakati by a unanimous 5-0 decision on Friday night.According to Namibia Press Agency, Haoseb adopted an aggressive approach from the opening bell and dominated throughout the three-round contest, convincing all five judges, Michelle Paulo (Brazil), Tassaneeya Buranakoson (Thailand), Maria Javier (Mexico), Lee Innes (England) and Said Moufassir (Morocco), to award him the bout. Vilakati struggled to make an impact, landing only a handful of clean punches over the course of the contest, which proved insufficient to win a single round on any of the judges' scorecards.Speaking to Nampa after the victory, Haoseb expressed pride in representing Namib ia and said he was eager for the challenges ahead. "Today's fight went well, and I am delighted to have won my first bout at the Commonwealth Games. I have three million Namibians on my shoulders, and I am proud to represent them. One fight is done, and I am ready for the next one," he said.Haoseb is scheduled to face Togo's Charif Yaya in the round of 16 on Sunday, 26 July, at 14h30 Namibian time. Other Namibian athletes who were in action are, swimmers Oliver Durand (men's 200m individual medley), Jessica Humphrey (women's 50m butterfly), Jose Canjulo and Ronan Zuberg Wantenaar (men's 100m breaststroke), as well as the men's 4x100m freestyle relay team, who endured a disappointing day, with all failing to progress beyond the preliminary rounds.Meanwhile, Waylon Wentzel's campaign in the men's singles lawn bowls competition came to an end after a 2-0 defeat to Australia's Aaron Wilson in the Section A play-offs. Wentzel had opened his campaign with a victory on the first day of competition but was unable to maintain his momentum.More than 72 nations and territories are competing at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, where 215 gold medals will be contested across 10 sports from 23 July to 02 August.
