Mariental:The Hardap Regional Road Safety Forum was officially launched in Mariental, with stakeholders emphasizing the need for coordinated efforts to reduce road crashes, injuries, and fatalities. This initiative is part of the National Road Safety Council's strategy to reactivate regional road safety forums across Namibia's 14 regions to enhance coordination and promote responsible road use.
According to NAMPA, Mariental Mayor Ethel Isaacks highlighted the shared responsibility required from both motorists and pedestrians, especially as traffic volumes increase during the festive season. Speeding, driver fatigue, driving under the influence, unsafe pedestrian behavior, and disregard for road signs were identified as major contributors to preventable crashes.
In remarks delivered by Mariental Urban Constituency Councillor Iswarin Rooi on behalf of Hardap Governor Riaan McNab, it was noted that the forum aims to foster cooperation among institutions and communities for safer roads. McNab referenced national statistics showing Namibia recorded 1,747 road crashes, 2,996 injuries, and 279 fatalities between January 1 and August 9, 2026, with excessive speeding and reckless driving being significant factors.
McNab stressed the importance of caution and responsibility, especially given the long distances between locations in Hardap. He urged drivers to adhere to speed limits, avoid dangerous overtaking, and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy. He called on stakeholders to translate discussions into practical interventions and regular monitoring.
Namibian Police Force Hardap Regional Commander Sydney Philander stated that road safety is a collective responsibility, not solely that of police. He emphasized strategic priorities, including improving road user behavior, strengthening law enforcement, and updating road safety policies. Figures presented showed a notable decrease in crashes, injuries, and fatalities in Hardap compared to 2021, but speakers warned against complacency, underscoring that every life lost is one too many. The forums will operate under the leadership of NamPol regional commanders.
