Windhoek: The Ministry of Health and Social Services (MoHSS) has engaged the services of 120 unemployed youth from the National Youth Service (NYS) to clear overgrown bushes and restore public hospital surroundings to acceptable standards of cleanliness, safety, and dignity. The first clean-up activity took place on Friday, marking the start of this national effort to improve the appearance and safety of health facilities across the country.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Health Minister Esperance Luvindao said this effort comes in response to growing concern over the state of hospital grounds, particularly around Katutura State Hospital and the Windhoek Central Hospital, where thick, unkempt vegetation has become not only an eyesore but also a potential safety and hygiene concern.

Luvindao emphasized that this initiative is not a one-time project or campaign, but a shift toward establishing a new standard for hospital maintenance across the country. She highlighted the need for annual budgeting for such maintenance, similar to other essential services.

The 120 youth workers, mobilised through a partnership with the NYS, will assist with debushing at multiple State hospitals and health facilities. The programme is part of MoHSS's broader plan to create employment opportunities while simultaneously improving the nation's health infrastructure. Luvindao stressed the importance of involving unemployed youth and working with the NYS and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) learners to ensure young people are active participants in national development.
