Rundu:Heavy rain in Rundu on Wednesday caused significant damage to the staffroom at Ruben Makaranga Combined School, located in the Sauyemwa informal settlement. This facility is utilized by approximately 81 teachers for lesson preparation and other work activities.
According to NAMPA, the value of the damage has not yet been determined. Paul Malembo, the Head of Department for Commerce and Prevocational subjects, reported that the incident occurred around 01h00. The rainwater not only damaged school documents but also flooded the room, forcing learners to use brooms to clear the water while some desks were moved outside. Teachers were even seen working under trees due to the disruption.
The damage presents a challenge as the school prepares for end-of-year examinations. Exposed electrical cables pose a danger, especially to younger learners, with more rain expected.
Malembo expressed concern about the school's ability to continue normal activities if repairs are not made quickly. He appealed to the Sauyemwa community, businesses, and former learners across Namibia for assistance in repairing the damage.
Rundu Circuit Education Inspector Regina Haingura confirmed that the Kavango East Regional Directorate of Education is aware of the situation. After visiting the school, she instructed the principal to report on the damage for submission to the directorate. While the roof will be repaired, the process may take up to a month, as it requires coordination with the Ministry of Works and Transport. Haingura advised the school to secure important items as the rainy season is just beginning.
The school currently serves more than 2,000 learners.
