Mururani:Mururani Combined School in the Mankumpi Constituency is grappling with a lack of accommodation for its teachers due to an unfinished housing project that commenced in 2014.
According to Namibia Press Agency, Principal Alpheus Nairenge highlighted this issue during a visit by Kavango West Governor Verna Sinimbo. He described the incomplete houses as "white elephants" and stressed the urgent need to complete the construction, as teachers are currently living in shacks that become exceedingly hot.
Education Director Pontianus Musore noted that the housing project has stalled because of ongoing litigation handled by the education ministry's headquarters. The ministry is awaiting guidance from the Office of the Attorney General to resolve the legal issues.
Apart from housing challenges, the school also faces water shortages. The school depends on water deliveries from NamWater, with a single pump responsible for transferring water to the storage tank. In response to these challenges, Governor Sinimbo promised to provide a new water tank and made donations, including school uniforms for 40 marginalised learners, photocopy paper, and fruit trees.
Mururani Combined School, located 260 kilometers from the regional education office in Nkurenkuru, serves 892 learners and 29 teachers, with three teaching positions currently vacant. The school also accommodates 167 learners from marginalised communities.
