Swakopmund Constituency Councillor, Ciske Howard-Smith has resigned as the chairperson of the Erongo Regional Council (ERC) management committee.

Howard-Smith’s resignation follows a vote-of-no-confidence against her by several councillors during a council meeting on Friday.

According to Howard-Smith, she has decided to resign from this position as the sentiments are clear that Council does not want her in that position.

“I will not go against the wishes of the council. We are in a democratic country and we adhere to majority rule and I believe it would be the best for the progress of the council if I resign as the chairperson and just become an ordinary council member,” she expressed.

She noted that she will not be pursuing the matter further as she feels it would be a waste of council funds and her own time and energy, which she would much rather put into serving Swakopmund.

The councillor who was also accused of being disruptive, ill-mannered and non-progressive, said she would deal with the allegations as they have tarnished her image.

“The allegations were made public even before this council meeting and there was no proof provided for them. They are of a nature that is damaging to my reputation and I will most certainly deal with them,” she said.

Howard-Smith noted that she does not have a clear response on her future with IPC, the party she represented during the 2020 local and regional authority elections.
