Windhoek:Huawei Technologies Namibia has initiated an information and communication technology (ICT) competition roadshow and campus recruitment drive at the International University of Management (IUM) in Windhoek. The event, which began on Monday, brought together representatives from the IUM, the University of Namibia (UNAM), and the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST), along with lecturers, industry partners, and students.

According to NAMPA, Jason Xu, a board director at Huawei Technologies Namibia, emphasized the importance of students developing practical ICT skills to secure employment in the digital economy. Xu highlighted the need for young people to be equipped with skills in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, cybersecurity, and advanced telecommunications.

Xu noted that the Huawei ICT competition aims to enhance students' technical knowledge and provide exposure to industry-relevant technologies. The competition also fosters critical thinking, teamwork, problem-solving, and continuous learning among participants. Beyond the competition, the campus recruitment initiative seeks to connect students with career opportunities in the ICT sector.

He further stressed the importance of partnerships between academia and industry to bridge the gap between education and employment, ensuring graduates are prepared for the digital economy. Xu encouraged students to gain practical experience and strengthen their technical capabilities while being open to learning about new technologies. He urged that Namibia should not only adopt technology but also develop skilled individuals who can leverage it for job creation, solving local challenges, and driving national development.

The roadshow, which commenced in Windhoek, is focused on the central region and invites students from various areas to participate in the competition. Registration for the competition began in August and will conclude in November 2026, with the grand finale scheduled to take place in May 2027 in China.
