Oshakati: A 55-year-old man has been arrested for illegal fishing activities in the sewerage pond at Oshakati, while two other people were fined.

According to Namibia Press Agency, this was confirmed by the Namibian Police Force's Oshana Regional Commander, Commissioner Naftal Lungameni Sakaria, who spoke to Nampa on Tuesday. Sakaria stated that an intelligence-led operation conducted by members of the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources, with support from regional operations officers of the Namibian Police Force, led to the arrest and the issuing of two fines for illegal fishing activities in the sewerage pond located behind the Namibian Defence Force (NDF) base in Oshakati.

The suspect was arrested and charged with contravening the Inland Fisheries Resources Act No. 1 of 2003. He added that, in addition to the arrest, two fines were issued to a 41-year-old man and a 39-year-old woman during the operation.

Sakaria indicated that the male suspect received a fine for using a fishing net that did not comply with the prescribed mesh size requirements, while the second suspect was fined for engaging in drag netting, a prohibited fishing method.
