Rundu: Executive Director of the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology, Audrin Mathe, has called on government communication officers to strengthen their technical capabilities in digital platforms and data analysis. He also emphasised the need to develop strategic communication skills to design effective campaigns that resonate across Namibia's linguistic landscape.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Mathe made the remarks during the opening of a four-day workshop for government communication officers held in Rundu. The workshop aims to improve government communication, enhance transparency, and increase the impact of public messaging. Mathe highlighted that transparency in government communication is not just an ethical obligation but a strategic necessity that boosts government efficiency, builds public trust, and reinforces democratic institutions.

He added that while the Access to Information Act empowers citizens to make informed decisions and holds institutions accountable, legal frameworks alone are not sufficient. 'We must cultivate communication practices that proactively share information and engage citizens in meaningful dialogue,' he stated.

Also speaking at the event, Rundu Rural Constituency Councillor, Paulus Mbangu, emphasised the importance of adapting to rapid technological changes and the evolving media landscape. He highlighted the need for robust communication strategies and stronger digital infrastructure to meet the public's information needs.

Mbangu noted that there is a disconnect between how the government communicates and how the public receives information. He mentioned that the Access to Information Act was enacted to ensure the appointment of an independent Information Commissioner and Deputy Information Commissioner. He urged the National Assembly to expedite these appointments and expressed hope that the Ministry is addressing the communication gap.

Mbangu concluded by underlining the critical role of government communication in promoting transparency, trust, and citizen engagement. 'It is our responsibility to ensure that the information we share is accurate, timely, and accessible to all Namibians,' he said.
