Swakopmund: Norman Lucas, a member of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the African Union Sport Council (AUSC) Region Five Games, highlighted the unique inclusion of the Special Olympics in this year's event. This marks the first time the Special Olympics have been part of the games, adding a distinct element to the competition.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Lucas expressed that the participation of athletes in the Special Olympics brought a special atmosphere to the championships, emphasizing their rightful place in global sporting activities. This inclusion is a source of pride for Namibia, reflecting the country's commitment to diverse sporting disciplines.

Lucas also noted a standout performance during the field and track events, where a South African high jumper improved his personal best from 2.16 metres to 2.20 metres. The athlete's achievement was met with enthusiasm, illustrating the excitement and opportunities the games provide for young athletes in the region.

The AUSC Region Five Games serve as a crucial platform for junior athletes, preparing them for international championships in 2025 and 2026. Namibia has already selected athletes to compete in the Confederation of African Athletics Championships for under-18 and under-20 categories in Abeokuta, Nigeria, scheduled for July 2025. Additionally, the Namibia School Sport Union (NSSU) will debut in the inaugural African School Games in Algeria in August 2025.

Lucas detailed a busy athletics calendar, with junior athletes also set to participate in the 2025 Youth Games in Angola. This event will act as a qualifier for the groundbreaking Olympic events on African soil, leading up to the 2026 Youth Olympic Summer Games in Dakar, Senegal.

The 11th edition of the AUSC Region Five Games is taking place in Windhoek and Swakopmund from 04 to 13 July 2025, featuring competitions across various sports, including athletics, swimming, karate, and more.
