Keetmanshoop Urban Constituency councillor, Joseph Isaaks on Friday launched the 2021 Bennie Kilo (BK) annual football tournament at Keetmanshoop.

Speaking as he opened the tournament at the J Stephanus Stadium in Tseiblaagte, Isaaks said COVID-19 has robbed communities of loved ones as well as social lives, citing for the past year people were confined to their homes with no way of interacting.

“Therefore, at the smallest opportunity for a gathering, a sport event is the best option as studies have proven that people that exercise regularly stand a better chance at fighting off diseases, equally a fit body carries a healthy mind,” he said.

Isaaks said his decision to sponsor the tourney is because of his passion for football and his desire to see the local community engaging in productive fun.

“It is my sincere hope that this tournament will only grow bigger both in participation and impact, it is my wish to see this tournament take football in the region to another level and change the face of the sport in the region, however for sports to grow, it requires primary commitment of the players,” he added.

About 23 second and third division and non-league teams are participating in the tournament from Friday till Sunday.

The wining team will walk away with N.dollars 20 000 in cash, a floating trophy and gold medals, the second team will get N.dollars 10 000 and silver medals while the semi-final losers will earn N.dollars 5 000 each.
