Ishitile recovering well after twisting ankle

Namibia’s T11 sprinter and longer jumper Lahja Ishitile is recovering well after twisting her ankle during her first long jump training session on Sunday in Tokyo, Japan.

Ishitile, who is the only female in a team of three athletes that will represent Namibia at the 2020 Paralympic Games twisted her ankle after landing on a sand bag placed alongside the track during her last jump of the training session.

In an interview with Nampa on Tuesday, Namibia Paralympic Committee Secretary-General Michael Hamukwaya said they are hopeful that by the time her events start on Friday, she will be ready to compete.

“She is doing quite well and the injury is recovering although slowly. We are happy with the medical attention the doctors are giving her,” said Hamukwaya.

Team physiotherapist Julia Halwendo told this agency on Tuesday that the athlete is being taken care of and she will be ready for the competition.

“After twisting her ankle we took her for MRI scans where they told us she has a slight fracture but she is still very young and her bones can recover quickly. As we speak today (Tuesday) she is no longer limping like she did when the injury happened, she can now stand and walk comfortably on her foot,” Halwendo said.

She added that Ishitile was expected to go for another MRI scan on Tuesday which will give them an indication of the progress that has been made.
