Windhoek: A month after Netball Namibia named its preliminary training squad for the upcoming Region Five Games, former Ndonga Linena constituency councillor, Michael Kampota, has voiced dissatisfaction with the selection process.According to Namibia Press Agency, the 2026 Nedbank Namibian Newspaper Cup, staged over the Easter weekend in Keetmanshoop, saw Kavango West crowned netball champions, while the Erongo Region secured the football title. However, the aftermath of the tournament has been overshadowed by criticism of how players were selected for consideration for the Under-20 national netball team.Speaking to Nampa recently, Kampota said concerns raised during the 24th edition of the tournament remain unresolved, particularly regarding the composition of the preliminary netball squad for the Region Five Games. 'Kavango East performed exceptionally well, yet only one player was selected. Selectors claim the decisions were based on early preliminary rounds, which is unfair. Players develop as the tou rnament progresses, and some who excelled in later stages were overlooked entirely,' he said.Kampota further argued that the process appeared unbalanced. Despite strong performances in recent years, including back-to-back titles, representation from the Kavango East Region remained minimal, while other regions appeared to benefit disproportionately. 'This is often the only pathway for these players to reach national level. Denying deserving athletes the opportunity to attend trials or national training camps limits their potential and raises questions about fairness,' Kampota said.In an interview with Nampa on Tuesday, Netball Namibia president Juanitha Witbeen confirmed that adjustments have been made following the initial selections announced in the //Kharas Region. 'The squad named in the //Kharas Region was only provisional. A second round of trials will take place from 14 to 17 May, providing another opportunity for players to be assessed. We have already added two players from Kavango East, includin g the tournament's best shooter and overall player,' Witbeen said.Witbeen said more than 105 players are expected to attend the upcoming trials, significantly broadening the selection pool. 'Each of the 14 regions will be allowed to nominate a further seven players. Additional invitations have also been extended to underage players from the 2025 squad, as well as to athletes from marginalised communities. This ensures a more inclusive process and gives all deserving players a fair chance to compete,' she said.A final training squad of 20 players will be selected following the trials, with 15 athletes ultimately representing Namibia at the Region Five Games, scheduled to take place in Mozambique in December 2025.
