Omuthiya: Governor of the Oshikoto region, Sacky Kathindi, emphasized the critical role of high-quality academic qualifications in advancing Namibia's socioeconomic transformation during an event on Friday.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Kathindi addressed an information and sensitisation session on the National Policy on Qualification Standards, organized by the Namibia Qualifications Authority (NQA) at the Omuthiya Multi-Purpose Youth Centre. He stressed that in the face of rapid technological advancements, industrial changes, and evolving economic landscapes, education and training systems must be relevant, responsive, and forward-looking.

Kathindi stated, "The qualifications awarded in our country must reflect not only academic achievements but also the competencies and practical skills required by our labour market and society." He highlighted that the National Policy on Qualification Standards is pivotal for Namibia's development, as it establishes clear minimum standards for qualifications registered on the National Qualifications Framework. This policy aims to safeguard quality, promote consistency, and ensure graduates possess the necessary knowledge and skills for their qualification levels.

Kathindi also pointed out the policy's objective to address the skills mismatch between educational institutions and employer requirements, a common challenge in developing economies. "As government continues to pursue economic diversification, industrialisation, and sustainable development, we require a workforce that is competent, innovative, and internationally competitive," he explained.

He urged stakeholders to back initiatives that enhance the education and training system's quality and integrity, noting that the policy's success relies on collaboration among government institutions, educational providers, employers, professional bodies, and the public.

Meanwhile, Joseph Hamunyela, NQA Head of Qualifications, mentioned that the policy, approved by Cabinet in December of the previous year and launched by the Ministry of Education in March, is now effective and necessitates immediate implementation. Hamunyela emphasized that the NQA is responsible for overseeing accreditation and qualification matters in Namibia and remains the sole institution managing the National Qualifications Framework.
